A Letter From Our Founder
For as long as I can remember, I wanted to be a father. In June of 2016, that wish came true when my partner, Stephanie, gave birth to our first daughter, Coraline. Stephanie and I embarked on the journey of parenthood.
Overall, Coraline was a pretty easy baby. Ate, slept, filled diapers, didn’t cry when she looked at my face. Things were pretty good.
But it still felt isolating at times. I was so impressed by the number of support groups and services for new mothers in the area. There were Facebook groups. Blogs. Postnatal yoga. Play groups. Breastfeeding groups. Baby wearing activities. More too. And it made me so happy to know there was a supportive community for my partner, because I cannot imagine what that transition into motherhood must feel like. Supporting new moms is so important. But what about dads? Among the dozens of groups that existed for new moms, the number of dad offerings were very few and far between. Once Coraline entered my world, life changed pretty dramatically: I saw my friends less; personal hobbies were quickly put on the back burner; my free time vanished and my responsibilities increased. I started to feel isolated with few people to talk to, especially folks going through the same experience. Dads need support too. |
Over the past three years, I have connected with a lot of dads in the area, and the message is clear: they want to be involved. Dads want to be in their kids’ lives. Dads want to go to play groups. Dads want to talk about how they’re experiencing fatherhood. Dads want to share dad jokes. Dads want to connect with other dads--Introducing Dad Guild.
In collaboration with a number of other fathers in the greater Burlington area, Dad Guild is here to create a supportive network of dads in our community. Playgroups. Dad’s Night Out. Online community forums. Meal plan sharing. Monthly calendars. Volunteering. And more. If you have an idea of how Dad Guild can be of service, let us know.
We are dads helping dads be dads. Spread the word. Thanks for reading.
