OPCs in the Community Workshop

What is an Overdose Prevention Center? Are they effective? Is one coming to Burlington? This workshop will explore these questions and more.

There has been a lot of talk in the Burlington area recently about Overdose Prevention Centers. But what exactly is an OPC? What would Burlington’s OPC offer? Why Burlington? What are the anticipated community impacts of an OPC?

As a parent, what do I need to know about and should I be concerned? Join Dad Guild and Bella Fearn of VT Harm Reduction Advocates for a Workshop & Town Hall event to learn more about Overdoes Prevention Centers and the impact they have on communities. Bella will explain how OPCs work, share some data, and create an opportunity for caregivers to ask questions and voice their thoughts. This learning opportunity on Wednesday, January 28th from 7pm-8:30pm is available to all caregivers in the community.

Exploring Masculinity: Community Screenings & Discussion

Watch the documentary Gone Guys [45min] and The Mask You Live In [only showing first half, 45min] and engage in a conversation about boys, men and patriarchy.

As described above, the documentary Gone Guys has been popping up at screenings across the state over the past six months. On Saturday, January 31st from 7pm-9pm, Dad Guild will be hosting a community screening at the Guild Hall located in the Soda Plant. In addition to watching the 45-minute film, we will also be screening half of the acclaimed 2015 documentary, The Mask You Live In, from The Representation Project. Following both screenings, Dad Guild staff will host an informal discussion for folks to share their reactions, ask questions, and ensure all participants have a deeper understanding of how the patriarchy harms us all. This community screening is open to all members of the community.

Raising Boys & What You Can Do About it

Young boys are making headlines these days, and the reasons aren’t that positive. Fewer boys are enrolling in college, many are struggling with isolation and addiction, and there are a lot of problematic messages out there telling boys they need to act tough and “suck it up.” What is the manosphere, and how do parents differentiate between positive and negative online spaces? What impact may the world have on our sons as they move through adolescence?

Join us for this evening for town-hall conversation led by author Kate Mangino

Toast & Jams (Chris Dorman)

The Toast & Jams family concerts have been our biggest events attendance-wise. Last year was so popular we started to run up to the fire code limit at Contois Auditorium in Burlington City Hall.  Naturally, having such a huge turnout is a wonderful “problem” to have.

So this year, Toast & Jams is heading to Higher Ground! That’s right, we’ll be toasting and jamming at one of the main music venues in the area! We have the dates and musical guests lined up, so mark your calendars:

Saturday, January 3, 2025 - Los Sóngoros
Saturday, February 14, 2025 - Chris Dorman
Saturday, March 14, 2025 - Lazer Dad

Doors open at 10:00 AM and - like years past - will have 9 holes of free mini golf from the Portable Mini Golf Company along with all you can eat sourdough toast and jams from Miss Weinerz.

This year we ask families to register in advance so we don't have to turn people away due to capacity constraints. Tickets are available by donation on the Higher Ground website, with families being asked to pay what they can.

Gone Guys Screening

Gone Guys Screening

Dad Guild is featured in the local documentary Gone Guys. We are excited to co-host a screening of it with the filmmakers this winter.

Over the past fifty years, boys and young men have steadily disengaged from school, work, and broader society. They’re falling behind academically, struggling with loneliness and isolation, and facing rising rates of substance abuse and suicide.

This 45-minute documentary draws on the influential work of Richard V. Reeves’ “Of Boys and Men”, illuminating these challenges through powerful data and compelling personal stories. Many of us have experienced these issues first-hand, but it can be difficult to talk about them. It’s not an either-or choice: caring more about boys and men does not mean caring less about women and girls.

Set in rural Vermont, the film brings national data to life with engaging animation accompanying lived experience featuring young men, educators, mentors, and trailblazing programs that are working to re-engage boys and young men in their communities and reshape their futures.

Sunday Morning Fam Jams

The Guild Hall is officially open for families to enjoy Sunday morning from 9:30am - 11am. From 9:30 - 10:00, father, musician, and early childhood educator Alex Baron facilitates a music jam for all family members. We’ll have some instruments on hand for you and your littles to enjoy! Following the musical portion of the morning, families are invited to spend the next hour enjoying a casual playgroup in the space. Families had been hanging around afterwards anyways, so we figured we’d just make it official!

Programming is designed for children ages 0-3 years

Additionally, our good friends at Haymaker Buns downstairs will be offering $5 kids’ meals with any adult meal purchased to all playgroup attendees!

CANCELLED - Fly Tying Workshop

This event has been cancelled due to wintry icy conditions.

Join Dad Guild for a hands-on fly-tying workshop series led by expert angler Nate, where dads and kids learn essential fly-tying techniques, build confidence, and strengthen connections through the shared joy of fishing. The flies you create in this workshop will come to life on the water when Nate leads a hands-on river session this spring or summer.

Hot Dog dinner will be offered during the event.
